The Change Leader's Team - A Lesson From Childhood

One of the greatest lessons that successful Change Leaders often discuss about change is that it must be a team initiative and cannot be achieved alone. When advising our clients on how to lead a change team we often show how experiences from all our childhoods can help us all learn more about change.

Do you remember when you were young and it was the time to pick members for a team game. Were you the first to get picked or the last? Or were you somewhere in-between hoping that someday you would be first and hoping that you wouldn't be last?

Whether the memory is clear or not I am sure that the emotions involved strike a chord. But this was not the end of the drama as once you entered the team you had to quickly learn what your role would be. I am sure that there are captains reading this article but they too had to do some quick learning. This article wants to focus on the shady area in-between.

Here's were the change leader needs to deploy their leadership skills to enable all members of the team to come to terms to some simple, but ultimately critical, questions.
  • Why Am I Here?
  • What Role And C ontribution Do I Make To The Team?
  • What Is And What Is Not Expected Of Me?
  • How Will I Know If I Am Playing My Part Successfully?
  • What Happens If I Am Not Playing My Part?
  • Will I Receive The Skills I Need To Be An Active Participant Of The Team?
  • What Is In It For Me?

When the change leader can answer these questions, for themselves first, and then for their team it will make the change initiative all the easier.
